Friends Update - Spring 2019

Friends Communications have been quiet of late so as the collection has been very busy we thought it time to let you in to what we have been up to.
So where are we to date? The bulk of the collection; the objects, library, photographs and uniform are still stored at Okehampton Police Station. The archive (all original Papers and files), is now stored at the Devon Heritage Centre (DHC). The South West Police Heritage Trust has a partnership with the DHC and several volunteers now catalogue the archive from there.
Since the formation of the registered charity, the appointed Trustees are responsible for the ownership and running of the historic collections of the Devon and Cornwall Police. They are working under the title Devon and Cornwall Police Heritage.
The Friends group started life in 2011 as Friends of the Heritage and Learning Resource and as our new logo depicts, we are now formally Friends of the Heritage Trust.
Three of the Friends have during the past twelve months attended various blue light and heritage events in Devon and Cornwall taking the Friends van and display items such as truncheons, equipment and uniform, for display and handling. With more volunteers it would be possible to increase our attendance at such events and any interested member (who incidentally is covered by our insurance) would be most welcome.
Additionally, the Friends have assisted with the WW1 display at Headquarters and Bodmin and the policing in Cornwall display. Further pop up displays are planned for the coming months and may include Women in Policing and a Federation Centenary display.
One of our members, Mr John Casson, has been instrumental in the creation of a Friends Fundraising Advisory Committee. His contribution, match funded by the Friends, has enabled progress to be made towards developing major fundraising strategies.

So what are we doing for the future.

  • AGM 2019 Monday 29 April.
  • Looking to increase our membership.
  • Working with the curator and Trust to find new premises for the collection.
  • Continuing support of the Trust by purchasing items as required.
  • Continuing outreach work.
  • Organisation of an Open Day for Friends and visitors

We hope that this overview has bought you up to date and you know that your membership is very much appreciated. We are still looking for a Treasurer but there is no necessity for you to be an official committee member to help at events or on projects, we would just welcome seeing you.

Roger Jacob is pleased to announce the publication of his book "Scillybeat' Memoirs of a Scilly Copper.

This memoir was conceived to mark 50 years since a young police officer was posted to an island community that had been ‘self-policed’ in a most unconventional manner prior to 1947 and where community policing existed in its most natural and organic format and long before it became a buzzword and initiative of choice on the mainland.

Our own specially adapted van is ready to book with full liability insurance for Friends activities. The volunteers are happy to attend pre booked community events when they can display such items as replica objects, activity boxes for young people as well as information on the South West's policing heritage. Police officers may loan and drive the van themselves.
At least four weeks notice is required for its loan.
We are always looking for funding to keep it on the road so if you can help please contact us

Rethinking Murder

The 'Friends' organised a very successful fund raising event 'Rethinking Murder - Lost Lives and Living Archives'. It was very well supported with an opening address by Sir John Evans. There were two exhilarating illustrated talks by Angela Sutton-Vane BSc MRes. & Simon Dell M.B.E. and everyone had a fantastic day.

Start Bay

Operation Tiger was a WWII training exercise held off start Bay when nearly1000 American soldiers lost their lives following German U boats attacking the exercise. A memorial service was held at start Bay to mark the 70 anniversary. Over 200 local school children attended as well as representatives from the armed forces and local population.
The friends attended with their van and displayed such items as a World War Two siren and war posters all of which come from the heritage and Learning resource collection.

‘Come inside the tardis’

‘Come inside The Tardis’ was a display and open morning at Cheriton Bishop. It was a great success and even more with the children!. We loved meeting everyone from the area and plan to do similar events throughout the year. This event was sponsored by the Cheriton Bishop & Crockenwell Neighbourhood Watch, helping to make old and young aware of the heritage that protected us then and now.

Police Car renovation

Here are images of the restoration project carried out by the students at South Devon College on the old police car donated to the collection that was kept in a garage at Okehampton Police station. It is now in a temporary facility in Okehampton and we are looking for a more permanent home. If you can help please contact us.
